When I started my vegan lifestyle more than a year ago, vegan restaurants or good vegan options were quite rare in Amsterdam. Prior to becoming I vegan, I was a vegetarian for about 7 years and wasn’t faced with a big a challenge going out for food as you are when vegan.
Now luckily for all us vegans, times have changed! More and more restaurants serve great vegan options or have a vegan menu, which makes going out for dinner or a quick bite a lot more easy. Please find my top vegan picks in the city of Amsterdam, below!
Spirit is a vegan/vegetarian establishment. It has a sort of cafeteria vibe to it, with a buffet where you can scoop up as much (or as many times) as you like. They have a breakfast buffet (from 08:00 till 11:00) and a lunch/dinner buffet (from 11:00 till 23:00). Honestly, truly, this place is amazing. They have vegan pastries, cakes and pies; scrambled tofu; vegan tzatziki; vegan soups; vegan pastas; vegan salads; I mean the list goes on. Did I mention vegan pastries, cakes and pies?
I believe every Amsterdam inhabitant knows (of) Mook and can vouch for their deliciousness. Mook has the most delicious pancakes a vegan (or non-vegan) can eat. Their topping-style varies from sweet such as fresh fruit with maple syrup, to savory such as hummus with roasted peppers and avocado. Order a fresh coconut or fruit juice on the side and your healthy and delicious meal is ready! Don’t forget to mention you want your pancakes vegan when placing your order.
Although the Corner Bakery isn’t necessarily an all vegan place, their bowls which are all vegan are truly, phenomenal. You can choose between the classic Acai Bowl or a fresh Mango or Bali Bowl. All served with fresh fruit and their home made granola, which is honestly what dreams are made off. The Corner Bakery is very popular and usually quite busy, especially during breakfast and lunch hours. So if you have your eyes set on their deliciousness, try to book a table before you go!
Café de Paris
I discovered this little gem when going to this little treasure for a birthday dinner. Café de Paris has a tiny vegan section on the menu (please note, I’m forever grateful they have a vegan section on the menu to begin with), with two rather better known options: Beetroot Carpaccio and Grilled Veggies done in a certain way. Now the 3rd option had me a bit shook to be honest: the Vegan Steak. Personally, I’m always a bit hesitant with meat replacements as they can have a very distinct taste. Some I love, some not so much. After some encouragement from the waitress I ordered the Vegan Steak and BOI AM I GLAD I DID. It is made of several vegetables, including beetroot which gave a bit of red juice on the plate and freaked me out, not gonna lie. The steak was served with fries and vegan mayo. Now this meal, ladies & gents, was a freakin’ party. An absolute, delicious party. It was fresh and something different for a change. Café de Paris, well done!
Quite a well known spot amongst the vegan and vegetarian lot I believe. You can go there for breakfast, lunch, dinner en most importantly, desserts. Please make sure to call before hand if you want to go there for a cup of tea and some sweets as they often are out of stock regarding the cakes and pies.
Other places you can check out as a vegan are Koffie ende Koeck, Dophert, Vegabond, Beter & Leuk en de Ceuvel. If you have any more suggestions of vegan restaurants or places where they have good vegan options, please please please let me know in the comments!
All the love,
